Riichi Copenhagen Open 2005

First hand of the tournament.

In the background: the countdown clock. Each round was 55 minutes. The hand in progress at the chime of the bell, was finished.

Early in the day we had the first floor of Temple Bar pretty much to ourselves.

The place had atmosphere with sofas in the back.

The table of the officials with prizes and computer. Out the window you see the shops of Nørrebrogade, one of the busiest streets in Copenhagen; business not pictured. Tournament officials Morten Andersen and Anders Labich not pictured either.

Lars, waiting with two changes on a hand of three yaku and four dora (haneman: 12000 points), feeding Henrik two yaku (2000 points).

Jeppe going out. Riichi, Ippatsu, dora (3 character), dora (red five character) and 40 minipoints; i.e. 4-40 aka pseudo-mangan. Is that the dice at Jeppe's right hand? Ouch, he's east, that's 12000.

The score after four founds.

Tina had hoped for a good score in the last round: a place in the top three was not out of reach. Soon she realized, however, that she was facing Death by Dutchman.

After having won the mahjong tournament at the Copenhagen gaming convention Viking-Con last week, Claes had a day of bad luck on his very birthday.

The score after five rounds. One round to go.

Score sheet from the middle of the final round where the four leading players met. Martin stays east for the rest of this game, winning another four hands, and finishing that round with a score of 50800, making his total score in six rounds an amazing 145800. Notice Henrik Leth's score after three hands: 16900. The next six hands are won by Martin: five of them by self draw. Henrik ends on a score of -600 without feeding a single hand. Ouch!

Notice how everybody has a drink in hand? In the short break waiting for the prize ceromony Robert bought a round of drinks for all participants in celebration of his 30th birthday.

Dutch player Janco won the second prize.

7-0 for Jeppe and Anders. The Temple Bar regulars have met their superiors and are soon to face defeat.

Camilla and Claes having a laugh; relaxing after a long day of playing mahjong. The Bar gave free fancy red drinks for the two birthday celebrators: Claes and Robert.
